Rougemont sits at the heart of this northern Durham County landscape, where the headwaters of several significant river systems begin their descent toward the coast. The area is defined by the drainage basins of the Flat River, Little River, and North Fork Little River, which support numerous small impoundments and community landmarks like Lake Rogers and Lake Orange. The terrain rises to a literal peak at Red Mountain, a feature that shares its name with the nearby settlement of Red Mountain.
