The northern plains of Hill County are defined by a rhythmic series of deep drainage channels, or coulees, that cut through the high prairie landscape. In this specific region of Montana, the topography is dominated by the winding paths of Fourmile Coulee in the northwest and Big Coulee to the northeast. These landforms reflect the complex glacial and water-carved history of the area, providing natural breaks in the otherwise consistent grid of section lines.
