Rio Ruidoso flows through a canyon-cut landscape in the northern reaches of the Sacramento Mountains, defining the early development patterns of Ruidoso and Ruidoso Downs. In this high-elevation terrain, water management is evident through features like the Herrera Ditch and numerous upland stock tanks, such as Red Bluff Tank and Blanche Tank. Much of the topography is defined by significant ridges and peaks including Sierra Blanca and Whitetail Mtn.
