Klamath Mountains and the northern reaches of the Scott Valley dominate this northern California landscape during the mid-1980s. The region is defined by its deep drainages and legacy of extraction, characterized by numerous gulches and isolated mine sites such as the Gumboat Mine and Franklin Mine. Small centers of habitation and local infrastructure are scattered throughout the Klamath National Forest, with Patterson Road providing access to the interior and landmarks like the Meamber School and Meamber Bridge serving the rural population.
