Sainte Genevieve and its surrounding riverfront settlements are centered on this study of the Missouri-Illinois borderlands along the Mississippi River. The landscape is defined by the sharp transition from the low-lying agricultural plains of Bois Brule Bottom and the Big Field to the rising elevations of Beckett Hills and Lick Hill. This proximity to the river influenced the early development of communities such as New Bourbon and Quarry Town, while the interior shows the convergence of South Gabouri Creek and North Gabouri Creek.
