Salado and the surrounding ranching landscape of Apache County are defined by a complex network of water management features along the Little Colorado River. At the time of this 1971 field check, the area utilized a system of irrigation canals including the Upper Lyman Ditch and Lower Lyman Ditch to divert water from Lyman Lake. These agricultural efforts supported isolated outposts such as Chavez Ranch and the White Corral Windmills.
