Salem and its outlying rural settlements occupy this high-relief landscape along the Arkansas-Missouri state line in the early 21st century. The terrain is defined by a series of prominent elevations and deep hollows, notably Salem Knob, Turkey Knob, and Wallace Knob. The hydrology of the region is anchored by the South Fork Spring River, which receives numerous tributaries including Mill Creek, Katy Branch, and the spring-fed Cole Branch.

Evidence of local development and water management appears through features such as Langston Lake and Courtwright Lake, both supported by dedicated dams. Further north, the small communities of Sturkie and Moko are connected by a network of rural roads, including the Republic Hwy. Local heritage is preserved at Hunter Cemetery near the southern boundary, while the northern edge near Cornertown is marked by the winding courses of Nail Creek and Anthony Branch.
