Salem serves as the primary hub in this portion of the Blue Ridge foothills, situated at the junction of SC-130 and local roads leading into the Sumter National Forest. The landscape is dominated by the massive impoundments of Lake Jocassee and Lake Keowee, which have fundamentally reshaped the drainage patterns of Boones Creek, Fall Creek, and the Little River. These waters now submerge or border older communities like Jocassee and Eastatoe.
