Salmon Fork Thirtymile Creek and the surrounding drainage network define this high-desert portion of the Oregon backcountry. The landscape is heavily marked by a complex system of deep draws and drainages, including the aptly named Jump Off Joe Canyon and the winding Badger Canyon. The northern half of the map is dominated by the Gilliam County line, while the southern section transitions into Wheeler County near Rettie Butte, a prominent high point standing above the Comstock Basin.
