Saltville and its industrial corridor along the Holston River North Fork anchor this map of the Southwest Virginia highlands. The landscape is defined by the massive ridge of Clinch Mountain, which separates the settled valley of Belfast to the north from the industrial salt-extraction and chemical operations to the south. In the late 1950s, the Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp RR and N and W RR served the local economy, connecting salt wells and a large settling pond to the broader rail network.
