San Pedro and its bustling waterfront define the eastern edge of this late nineteenth-century coastal survey. Before the extensive harbor re-engineering of the modern era, the landscape shows the natural indentation of Portuguese Bend and the prominence of San Pedro Hill rising above the bluffs. Maritime navigation is anchored by the Point Fermin L.H. at the southern tip, guarding the entrance to San Pedro Bay.

The local rail economy is clearly established through the presence of the S.P.R.R. San Pedro Branch and the L.A. Terminal Ry., which connected the ports of Terminal Id. and East San Pedro to the growing Los Angeles interior. This edition records the area as it appeared in 1894, featuring several islands and points including Smith Id. and Timms Pt. that have since been significantly altered by industrial port development.
