The Youghiogheny River carves a deep path through this borderland, where the boundary between West Virginia and Maryland follows a rigid north-south line across high ridges like Nettle Ridge and Dog Ridge. The landscape is defined by its transition from the steep river canyon to high upland bogs, most notably the expansive Pine Swamp and Murray Swamp. These wetlands sit at the headwaters of numerous runs that feed into Deep Creek Lake and the river.

Settlement patterns in the early 21st century remain concentrated near older landmarks like the Oak Grove Church of the Brethren and small clusters at Cranesville and Lake Ford. Genealogy researchers will find several well-documented burial sites including Lake Ford Cem, Upper Sang Run Cem, and Sisler Cem. Notable natural landmarks include Muddy Creek Falls and Swallow Falls near the southern edge of the survey area, along with the distinct peak of Pigeon Knob.
