The Youghiogheny River carves a deep path through this borderland, where the boundary between West Virginia and Maryland follows a rigid north-south line across high ridges like Nettle Ridge and Dog Ridge. The landscape is defined by its transition from the steep river canyon to high upland bogs, most notably the expansive Pine Swamp and Murray Swamp. These wetlands sit at the headwaters of numerous runs that feed into Deep Creek Lake and the river.
