Lake Michigan dominates the western edge of this 1981 survey, where the moving sands of the Saugatuck Dunes State Park and the prominent Mt Baldhead overlook the mouth of the Kalamazoo River. The geography of the shoreline preserves the site of Singapore, a prominent early settlement located just north of the Old Saugatuck Light House. The map captures the dual character of the region, from the developed waterfronts of Saugatuck and Douglas surrounding Kalamazoo Lake to the more rural landscape of Laketown and Fillmore.
