Sawmill Butte rises as a prominent landmark in this high-elevation landscape along the boundary between Wasco and Jefferson counties. The terrain is defined by a dense network of Bureau of Indian Affairs and forest roads, including the B-140 Rd and B-233 Rd, which navigate the various ridges and drainages. The hydrology of the area is particularly complex, with several watercourses carving through the uplands, such as the N Fork Boulder Cr and S Fork Boulder Cr, which converge as they flow eastward.
