Sawmill Butte rises as a central landmark in this high-elevation terrain where Wasco and Jefferson counties meet. The landscape is defined by an intricate drainage system including Shitike Creek in the south and the branching headwaters of Boulder Creek, including the North Fork and South Fork. These waterways cut through the timbered uplands and the relatively level stretches of Mill Creek Flat and Miller Flat.
