Sawmill Butte rises as a prominent landmark in this upland landscape where the Wasco and Jefferson county lines meet. The terrain is defined by a series of parallel watercourses flowing eastward, most notably Shitike Creek in the south and the various branches of Boulder Creek and Mill Creek to the north. These drainage patterns have created distinct topographic features like Miller Flat and Mill Creek Flat, which likely provided the easiest passage for the region's early logging and resource extraction efforts.
