Big Sandy Creek defines the southwestern drainage of this high plains landscape, while the namesake Schafer Reservoir provides a critical water source in an otherwise arid expanse. The terrain is deeply incised by numerous seasonal drainages, most notably Schoolhouse Gulch and Aroya Gulch, which cut through the open rangeland along the border of Cheyenne and Lincoln Counties. The diagonal corridor of Us-287 N serves as the primary artery through this sparsely populated region, intersecting a grid of local county roads such as CO Road 2G and CO Road 44 that facilitate access across large ranching tracts. This 2013 survey illustrates the enduring rural character of the eastern Colorado plains, where land use remains primarily agricultural and centered around significant water features like Folger Gulch and Adobe Gulch.
