Schonchin Butte and the surrounding volcanic landscape of Siskiyou County are documented here through a dense network of geological and natural landmarks. The terrain is defined by the legacy of the Schonchin Flow and Callahan Flow, creating a specialized environment where natural formations such as Bearpaw Natural Bridge and Symbol Bridge emerge from the lava beds. This area, protected in part by the Lava Beds National Monument, features a subterranean world including Merrill Ice Cave, Tickner Cave, and Heppe Cave.
