The Eel River winds through the heart of this Northern California landscape, connecting the lumber towns of Rio Dell and Scotia. The river's path is marked by significant spans like the Murphy Memorial Bridge and the Fleisher Memorial Bridge near the settlement of Stafford. To the south, the terrain rises toward Monument Ridge and the peak of Mt Pierce, where the forest breaks into a series of named grasslands including Barkdull Prairie, Moores Prairie, and Giacomini Prairie.
