The Trough defines the western edge of this survey, where the South Branch Potomac River cuts deeply between Mill Creek Mountain and Sawmill Ridge. This distinctive gorge, long a landmark for local travel, sits adjacent to the small community of Sector and the nearby Poorhouse Cem. To the east, the terrain rises sharply into the massive ridges of Nathaniel Mountain and South Branch Mountain, much of which is contained within the Nathaniel Mountain Wildlife Management Area.
