The confluence of the Pecos River and the Rio Grande dominates this borderland landscape, where the international boundary between the United States and Mexico follows the deep river channel. Much of the riverfront and its dramatic limestone breaks are protected within the Amistad National Recreation Area, reflecting a landscape defined by water conservation and federal land management. North of the border, the topography is carved by Seminole Canyon, which contains a network of footpaths including the Rio Grande Trail and Canyon Rim Trail.
