The Painted Rock Mountains dominate the eastern landscape of this portion of the Sonoran Desert, dropping away toward the broad, arid expanse of Tartron Flat. In the early 1980s, this area of Maricopa County served as a vital transportation and defense corridor. The Southern Pacific railroad cuts across the southern section of the map, passing through the small siding or settlement area of Quito and nearing Lorac East.
