The Nicolet National Forest dominates this Oconto County landscape, where the dense woodlands are carved by a complex network of forest roads and waterways. The northern section is particularly rich in glacial lakes, including the eponymous Shadow Lake, Star Lake, and the interestingly named Chicken Crop Lake. These water bodies, along with Hells Acre Springs, form the headwaters for the south branches of the Oconto River, which thread through the forest in various stages of relief.
