The Yellowstone River cuts through the northern reach of this Montana landscape, where the high plains of Stillwater and Carbon Counties meet. This 2014 survey documents a transition from the river valley floor at Flaherty Flat and Countrymans Bluff to the prominent rising landform of Shane Ridge in the south. The terrain is deeply incised by numerous drainages including Bearpaw Cr, Tufft Cr, and Coal Mine Coulee, reflecting a complex hydrology that has shaped the local geography.
