Shaw occupies a central position within this section of the High Plains, situated just south of the boundary between Washington Co and Lincoln Co. The landscape is defined by the winding course of the North Fork Arikaree River, which cuts through the southern half of the quadrangle, and Gordon Creek in the north. This survey illustrates a characteristic agricultural grid of the Eastern Plains, where a network of county roads such as Co RD 4 and Co RD 38 segment the terrain into large sections. The arrangement of these transit lines relative to the river's path provides insight into how land use and transportation were adapted to the natural drainage patterns of this semi-arid region.
