Butte Valley National Grassland dominates the western portion of this Northern California landscape, transitioning from the flat expanse of Butte Valley into a series of prominent volcanic peaks and ridges. The settlement of Somerset stands near the northwestern edge, situated along the Old State Hwy as it skirts the mountain foothills. This high-altitude basin is characterized by isolated formations like Inlow Butte and Murch Butte, which rise sharply from the valley floor.
