The White Knob Mountains dominate this high-elevation terrain within the Challis National Forest, where a network of steep drainages and prominent peaks defines the central Custer County landscape. High points such as Shelly Mtn, Lupine Mtn, and Redbird Mtn rise above the complex system of gulches and canyons. Water resources are concentrated in seasonal drainages like Alder Cr and Trail Cr, which eventually lead toward Mud Lake.
