Shitike Butte and Twin Buttes anchor the northern reaches of this high-desert and forested landscape within the Deschutes National Forest. The geography is defined by a series of deep drainages and volcanic landmarks, including Mid Butte and the prominent Castle Rocks. Water is a critical element here, with the Metolius River cutting through the southern portion and the Whitewater River bisecting the central terrain. A complex network of Bureau of Indian Affairs and forest roads, such as NW Tenino Rd and NW Bald Peter Rd, provides access across the Metolius Bench and through narrow canyons like Hubbards Draw. This survey captures the region's character as a managed wilderness where hydrologic features like Seekseequa Spring and Racing Cr dictate the movement of roads and boundary lines across the Jefferson County backcountry.
