The Mogollon Rim forms a dramatic escarpment through this high-country landscape, serving as a boundary between the Sitgreaves National Forest and the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The town of Show Low is established at the northern edge, with residential and educational infrastructure such as the NPC Campus and local medical facilities. To the south, the terrain drops away into the rugged drainage systems of Forestdale Creek and Skiddy Creek.

Remote outposts like the Forestdale Trading Post and specialized group sites including Camp Grace and Camp Tatiyee are situated along the margins of the reservation. The water management of the region is evident through numerous tanks and ponds, such as Scott Tank and the uniquely named Petes Retired Pond, which support the high-altitude ranching and forest operations characteristic of Navajo County in the late twentieth century.
