Bilk Creek Mountains and the prominent Shyster Butte define this high-desert reach of Humboldt County. The landscape is characterized by a complex network of ephemeral drainages and vital water sources that have historically supported ranching and movement through the Great Basin. Named springs such as Gartiez Spring, Etchart Springs, and Texas Springs dot the terrain, often serving as the primary landmarks in this unpopulated expanse. The topography rises sharply at Split Peak and House Creek Butte, overlooking the winding path of Bilk Creek and Deep Creek. This 2011 survey by the U.S. Geological Survey provides an intricate look at the land's natural contours and the specific locations of isolated springs like Little Sage Hen Spring and Lovely Valley Spring, which remain critical points of reference in the Nevada interior.
