The Pine Valley Mountains dominate this high-elevation landscape within the Dixie National Forest, defined by a network of drainage forks and steep canyons. Water sources are frequent throughout the terrain, from Maple Spring and Columbine Spring to the headwaters of the Right Fork Santa Clara River and Leeds Creek. This topography necessitated a system of backcountry routes for forest management and access, including the Whipple Trail, Summit Trail, and the Oak Grove Trail which traverses the slopes near Trail Peak.
