The Pine Valley Mountains dominate this high-elevation landscape, where sharp peaks and deep drainages define the wilderness boundary. Rising toward Signal Peak and Burger Peak, the terrain is marked by a complex network of seasonal water sources and springs, including Columbine Spring and Maple Spring. These highlands provide the headwaters for several important watercourses, such as the Right Fork Santa Clara River and the Middle Fork Santa Clara River, which carve deep canyons as they flow westward.
