Rio Salado carves through this high-elevation desert landscape in Socorro County, passing through a narrow constriction known as The Box. The terrain is defined by a series of steep drainages including La Cueva Canyon and Mule Canyon, which feed into the primary river system. In the northern reaches, the prominent peak of Cerro Colorado overlooks a network of ephemeral washes such as Cañada Popotosa.
