Mining operations and indigenous settlements define the landscape within the Papago Indian Reservation during the mid-twentieth century. The Slate Mountains and Silver Reef Mountains are dotted with historic extraction sites, including the Silver Reef Mine, Magma Queen Mines, and the Golden Standard Mine. These peaks overlook broad desert valleys where water management is evident through the presence of an Aqueduct, a long Aboveground Pipeline, and numerous gaging stations.
