About this map

Chichagof Island is defined by a complex network of glacial fjords and high peaks within the Tongass National Forest. This late-1940s survey reveals a landscape where maritime access is paramount, centered on the confluence of North Arm Hoonah Sound and South Arm Hoonah Sound. While largely undeveloped, the map records signs of seasonal or industrial activity, including a solitary Powerhouse and clustered Cabins at Fick Cove. The terrain transitions from the tidewater of Patterson Bay to elevations reaching Rust Mtn and Pinnacle Peak. Extensive Tidal Flat areas throughout the inlets suggest the shifting shoreline conditions encountered by local navigators and fishermen of the era, while the deep reach of Slocum Arm provides protected passage along the Khaz Peninsula.
