The San Juan River snakes through the southern reaches of this landscape, carving deep relief into the high desert plateaus of San Juan County. Large, flat-topped landforms including Polly Mesa, Douglas Mesa, and Cedar Mesa dominate the topography, providing a distinct view of the region's elevated geography. Much of the southern and central territory is managed within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, where the drainage of Johns Canyon and the winding Slickhorn Canyon feed toward the river. Access to these remote reaches is traced by the Johns Canyon Road and its associated Johns Canyon Road Trl, alongside the northern Point Lookout Rd. The map illustrates a high-desert environment defined by dramatic elevation changes, from the expanse of Hat Flat to the sheer drops of the canyon systems.
