The San Juan River carves a deep path through this corner of San Juan County, Utah, serving as the northern boundary for the Navajo Indian Reservation. This remote high-desert terrain is characterized by massive plateaus and deeply incised drainage systems like Slickhorn Canyon and Johns Canyon, which feed into the river from the northeast. The landscape transitions from the high elevations of Cedar Mesa and Pollys Pasture down toward the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Human markers are sparse in this late-twentieth-century study, represented primarily by the treacherous Government Rapids and topographical landmarks like Cowboy Hat and Hat Rock. The presence of a Drill Hole in the northeast suggests isolated resource exploration in a region otherwise dominated by the stark geometry of the Point Lookout plateau and the vast expanse of Douglas Mesa.
