About this map

The confluence of high-altitude forest management and complex drainage systems defines this rugged territory along the borders of Moffat, Rio Blanco, and Routt counties. Much of the terrain is protected within the White River National Forest and Routt National Forest, with a significant portion dedicated to the Indian Run State Wildlife Area in the northern reaches. The landscape is punctuated by prominent peaks such as Big Sugarloaf Mountain, Upper Sugarloaf Mountain, and Horse Mountain, while lower-lying basins like Salt Park and Lost Park provide clear breaks in the topography. Water movement is central to the area's character, with the Williams Fork and its South Fork drawing from numerous drainages including Alkali Creek, Crystal Creek, and Pagoda Creek. Evidence of resource exploration appears via a solitary Drill Hole near Pine Creek, while a Gaging Station on the Williams Fork monitors the vital flow through these mountain valleys.
