Kaibab National Forest encompasses the high desert terrain of this area, where deep drainages and intermittent water sources define the survival of the landscape. The intricate network of canyons, including the sprawling Sowats Canyon and its tributaries Little Sowats Canyon and Big Sowats Canyon, cut through the Kaibab Plateau. These geologic features are punctuated by critical water tanks and springs such as Sowats Spring, Little Sowats Spring, and White Pockets Tank, which have historically sustained travelers and livestock in this arid environment.
