Kiowa National Grassland dominates this high plains landscape in Colfax County, where the terrain is defined by the prominent Spear Hills and Chateau Hill. The area is characterized by a network of drainage features and ephemeral waterways, including the winding Arroyo Ojo-Verde, Salado Creek, and Hubsch Draw. These natural landmarks provided critical orientation in a region of vast open range and cattle ranching. Small family-named settlements and ranch sites such as Schell, Harris, Fluhman, and Burks are scattered along the local road network, which includes Co RD W and Co RD X. This 2011 survey captures the enduring rural character of the New Mexico plains, documenting the intersection of protected national grasslands with the private ranching heritage of the American West.
