About this map

Sarcobatus Flat dominates the central landscape of this western Nevada survey, reflecting a period of transition where early mining history meets Cold War aerospace expansion. The map was produced in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission, highlighting the strategic importance of the region at the time. To the east, the Nellis Air Force Range occupies a significant portion of the terrain, including a NASA Tracking Sta situated near an Old Railroad Grade. This transport corridor once served the mining districts of the Bullfrog Hills, evidenced here by the Pioneer (Site) and numerous Borrow Pits. The settlement of Springdale sits at the head of the Oasis Valley, south of Donovan Mtn and Oasis Mtn. The southwestern corner marks a portion of the Death Valley National Monument, showcasing the stark boundary between protected lands and active military and scientific research zones.
