The North Loup River meanders across the southern portion of this Cherry County landscape, a vital water source in this part of the Nebraska Sandhills. The terrain is defined by a series of low-lying basins and valleys, including Wamaduze Valley and Big Dry Valley, which are home to numerous isolated water bodies. These wetlands range from the smaller Alkali Pond to the more substantial Square Lake and Stout Lake.
