The United States-Canada border forms the northern boundary of this high-elevation mountain terrain within the Kootenai National Forest. The landscape is dominated by the Ten Lakes Scenic Area, a primitive region of deep glacial cirques and alpine basins like the Ten Lakes Basin. Strategic fire observation points are positioned on the highest summits, including the Stahl Peak Lookout and the Mount Wam Lookout. A complex network of drainage systems flows from these peaks, with the Wigwam River cutting through the northern valleys while Grave Creek and its South Fork drain the southern slopes. Notable landmarks such as Gibralter Ridge and Therriault Pass illustrate the challenging topography that historically shaped transit and land management along the Montana-British Columbia line.
