Glacial kettle lakes and dense secondary forest define this portion of the Michigan High Plains, straddling the Antrim Co Kalkaska Co border. The landscape is dominated by complex water systems, from the irregular shores of Starvation Lake and Manistee Lake to the smaller clusters of Eagle Lake, Waddell Pond, and MacNeil Pond. This terrain reflects the high-elevation moraine landscape typical of the northern lower peninsula, where internal drainage creates numerous isolated basins.
