Uncompahgre National Forest covers much of this high-elevation landscape, where deep canyons and flat-topped mesas dictate the movement of seasonal ranching and recreation. The terrain is defined by dramatic drop-offs such as Robbers Roost Canyon and the prominent landmark of Starvation Point, which looks out over The Tongue of Starvation. The distribution of seasonal settlements like Dillard Cow Camp, Lockhart Cow Camp, and Fortyseven Cow Camp reflects the long-standing use of these public lands for livestock grazing.
