The Missouri River winds through the northern portion of this landscape, carving a deep valley bordered by prominent landforms like Cap Rock Ridge and Sneath Bottom. This 2014 survey captures the rugged breaks and high plains of the Fergus and Chouteau county line, a region defined by its series of extensive benches and coulees. Notable features such as Eightmile Bench, Canavan Bench, and Missouri Bench illustrate the distinctive stepped topography of the central Montana plains. The interior is marked by the eponymous Starve Out Flat and dramatic geological depressions known as The Little Sag and The Big Sag. Water sources are sparse but critical in this arid environment, represented by Lohse Spring, Cow Camp Spring, and the path of Arrow Creek at the southern end.
