Balakai Mesa dominates the western half of this landscape, its steep escarpments dropping sharply toward the expansive basins of the Chinle Agency region. This 2014 survey captures a high-desert environment defined by its drainage systems and Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) road network. The seasonal flow of Balakai Wash and the oddly named Tse Ba Ni Zi Ni Wash in the northeast indicate the primary paths of water through this arid terrain.
