Stinking Coulee and the surrounding drainage basins of Dawson County define this portion of the Montana landscape as it appeared in 2020. This section of the High Plains is characterized by a network of intermittent stream channels and coulees that move water toward the Yellowstone River basin. Prominent watercourses include Lower Sevenmile Cr, which meanders across the northern townships, and the headwaters of N Fork Deer Cr and S Fork Deer Cr in the south.
