Pawnee National Grassland dominates the southwestern portion of this landscape, where the high plains of northeastern Colorado meet the boundary between Weld and Logan counties. This region is defined by a network of seasonal watercourses that have shaped the local topography, including Cottonwood Cr in the north and the meandering Pawnee Cr which cuts across the center of the sheet. The irrigation and water management history of the area is anchored by the East Stoneham Reservoir, a significant feature in an otherwise arid rangeland. The section lines and county roads, such as Co RD 34 and Co RD 155, reflect the rigid grid of the Public Land Survey System, providing a clear view of the rural infrastructure supporting the sprawling grasslands and ranching operations characteristic of the early 21st century.
