Stony Butte and the nearby formations of Black Butte and Pearl Butte define this portion of the Hettinger County landscape. These prominent elevations rise above a high plains terrain dissected by the drainage systems of Thirtymile Cr in the north and Spring Cr to the south. The land is organized by a strict section-line grid of rural roads, including the uniquely named Enchanted Hwy, which bisects the area from north to south. Other local routes like Bomber Club Rd and St Michael's Rd provide access to the dispersed agricultural holdings across townships T135N and T136N. This 2017 survey illustrates the enduring patterns of North Dakota's dryland farming and ranching, where the natural topography of the buttes serves as the primary landmark in an otherwise rectilinear human geography.
